If your junk car is 12 years old or newer we are required by law to collect a title when we buy it. Newer cars are more likely to have a lien on them, so someone still owes money on a vehicle and has to finish paying the vehicle off before the lien holder will release the title. We prefer not to buy junk cars with no title, but it is possible to get a replacement title for your car.

You have to get your first “original” title after a car purchase from your county tag office. If you’ve already owned a car title and want to get a replacement for the one you misplaced, go to the Motor Vehicle Division Main Office at the Department of Revenue. Make sure your title is signed in the right place. On the back of a Georgia title, there is a place where the seller signs and a place where the buyer signs. If the buyer line is already signed, then you cannot use that title to buy the car. What you would need to do in that situation is let the person who signed on the buyer side go and get a new title in their name. Most of the time, they are not going to want to do that because they would have to pay the taxes in order to get a new title in their name and that could cost around $150 or more depending on the value of the vehicle. In that case the person who’s name is printed on the front of the title (if you can find them) can either sign an affidavit of correction and get it notarized so that you can replace the other person as the buyer. On the other hand, the seller can just go down to the State Tax Commissioners office and pay an $18 fee to get a new title so you can sign on the buyer side instead of the previous buyer. I always prefer the latter option.

The vehicle identification number or VIN is the identifying code for a specific automobile. A salvage title is a title that identifies vehicles that have sustained major damages or have been deemed a total loss. Salvaged vehicles can be rebuilt and inspected to be re-registered. If your car or truck is in an accident and the cost of repairing the vehicle is a deemed too high compared to the value of the vehicle, your car insurance company will decide not to pay to have it repaired and declare it a total loss.
